Manager, Strategic Communications, KWI Communications
[Note: My contract prevents me from sharing detailed looks into what I work on and write for most of our clients.]
Client: Multiple teams at a top quick-service restaurant (QSR) chain
Examples:
I’ve worked closely with the QSR chain’s innovation team to understand and address their communications needs. With a focus on SharePoint content, the innovation leaders wanted to keep their team informed and build awareness of their capabilities. I have developed copy such as event recaps (example 1 / example 2) and resource promotion (example 1 / example 2) to help them reach their goals, in addition to contributing to an in-depth SharePoint content audit.
My work with innovation led to a connection with a restaurant design team, who also needed help simplifying and strengthening their SharePoint site. What started with a content audit and handful of writing projects — including general copy for the site and two small articles (here and here) — has grown into a larger commitment. Based on my proposed list of content solutions, the design team has requested I write new articles for their site each month highlighting their unique culture within the QSR ecosystem.
Executive communications, including blog posts and video scripts on sensitive issues of pricing and profits in the voice of the CFO and various EVPs
Scripting and run-of-show creation for large events
Restaurant-owner profiles that carefully point out best practices without being prescriptive (example)
Standard news articles to keep their employees up to speed (example 1 / example 2)
Time-crunched product, service and event updates via articles, scripts, emails and push notifications
Newsletters for nearly every facet of the account
Client: The Carter Center, a U.S.-based, globally focused nonprofit
Examples:
Scripts: As the client first got to know our agency, they asked for a few versions of a script to celebrate an important event at their headquarters. I provided multiple options and styles.
Reports and guides: After determining they liked my thorough editing style, the client gave me free rein to edit and rework an enormous set of modules on media literacy, trusting me to point out issues with wording, repetition and consistency. I followed up that project using the same approach on the corresponding facilitator guide and subsequent reports on international affairs. I am a go-to for editing lengthy reports on international democracy-building and voting-rights efforts.
News and profiles: I have gone on to profile amazing women — including Susan Marx, director of the Center's Human Rights Program; Stacia George, director of the Conflict Resolution Program; and Zarie Riley, director of the Education Programs — and cover important health news.
Client: Multiple teams (e.g., automotive, IT, engineering) within a global conglomerate
Examples:
Scripts: Creating multiple executive-voice scripts for large events; writing in the voice of a friendly AI chatbot to inform employees that I come in peace as a representative of the IT department (example 1 / example 2); turning dry how-to documents into helpful videos
Newsletters: Heavily editing compiled content in EmailOpen
Research: Supporting the KWI account team’s comms plan development by researching and finding case studies regarding the implementation of a particular internal communication channel
Other work for KWI
I’ve also been busy:
Creating internal style guides to ensure the team adheres to each client’s style
Building content calendars for client projects and for KWI’s one-woman DEI and marketing teams
Helping lead internal engagement efforts around DEI and culture
Managing and coaching awesome writers
Editing work from writers, account partners and clients
Co-founder / podcaster, Unladylike Media
Deep research and in-depth interviews informed the scripting process for the podcast (examples: Breast reductions / Maternal ambivalence / Getting canceled).
My business partner and I collaborated on a “social-justice self-help” book (Unladylike: A Field Guide to Smashing the Patriarchy and Claiming Your Space).
Each week, I wrote and compiled content for our newsletter, which featured news roundups, insights from our research and summaries of the past week’s Unladylike activities.
Staying curious, building empathy and raising hell professionally? Yes, please! As the Unladylike Media co-founder, I wore every hat, from the creative to the strategic (which is another kind of creativity) to the community-building.
Editor, HowStuffWorks.com
I absolutely loved getting to work directly with writers to help their research and writing shine. I’m not sure whether “dream jobs” really exist, but this one definitely came close. My role at HSW gave me the opportunity to nerd out on so many different topics, coach and develop solid relationships with my writers, and do what I love most: editing. The other half of my job at HowStuffWorks.com was co-hosting [and researching, writing detailed notes, penning blog posts and running social media for] the podcast Stuff Mom Never Told You.
Marketing writer / editor, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
Small Wonders donor magazine: Fall 2012 | Spring 2013 | Spring 2014 | Fall 2014
Small Wonders donor book: 2012
Medclips magazine for physicians: 2013
Marcus Autism Center: Brochure
CHOA really gave me the chance to flex my skills while serving a mission-driven organization. I wrote and edited copy for brochures, newsletters, magazines and the website that targeted a wide variety of audiences, from patients and families to potential donors to busy surgeons. No two days were the same, which meant honing my abilities to pivot quickly and seamlessly between tasks. I worked closely with my beloved design partners to present the best product possible.
Writer / editor / consultant, freelance
I’ve partnered with entrepreneurs to develop their brand voice/tone, stories and guides; about/bio copy; content calendars and best practices; and other web/brand content.
I worked on content marketing (blogging) for shipping-and-fulfillment company OneWorldDirect.
